Switching off the monitor won't stop the screensaver running. The computer has no way of knowing that the monitor is turned off - it'll just keep on processing the screensaver program.
Better to turn off the screensaver before defragging, as well as any energy saving settings. Both of these are a nuisance anyway - the computer will run better with both of these items deactivated.

Just shut off the monitor and you do not have to deal with the screen saver.
