You may partition the drive, but there is no need to do so. Acronis, or
Drive Image XML will create the backup as a FILE on the destination drive.
Thus, you can have multiple backups on a single partition. The advantage of
a single partition is that you will make better use of the space. For
example, if each backup fills up a bit over half a partition, then with two
partitions you only have room for two backups. In a single partition, you
would have room for three backups.

A friend of mine suggested Acronis too. I know most backup software requires
you to specify a backup drive. I need to backup 4 computers onto one
external HD. If I partition the external HD, will my computers see each
partition as a separate HD? If so, I should be able to designate partition
one for 1st computer and partition two for 2nd computer, correct?
