Win95 does not need a config.sys or autoexec.bat (in most cases)

If your friend must use autoexec.bat (due to older hardware, etc.)
then the LAST line MUST be:
C:\WINDOWS\WIN
(or whatever pathing is correct for his machine)

Since your message states
    "...runs OK after C:\win to get to windows..."
I should point out that this is probably not correct.

That command says:  "load windows from the root directory."
I doubt that your friend installed windows at the root, if
he did, then that is a major part of his/her problem.

You need to get a clear picture with accurate details before
we can offer more/better advice.
