The statement, "My grandson had one of those free minutes on aol and he
tried to install it and now we have this problem" is key. Installation is
now not right. First, uninstall and reinstall dial-up networking,
rebooting after each operation. If that doesn't get you on-line, then
reinstall the other items that are part of dialing up with a modem. This
would include network connection, etc. (You do not give your OS.) Your
ISP's technical support should help if you need assistance.
