The analogy I use with my students is:
Simply shutting off the power, or pressing the reset, or doing a
three finger salute (ctrl+alt+del) is like sweeping everything off
your desk into the center drawer at the end of the day. Tomorrow
when you open the drawer, it will be jumbled but you can straighten
it out fairly easily.
The problem lies in repeatedly doing this. After several days,
the drawer gets more and more crowded and jumbled until eventually
you have no idea what's in there anymore.
The same thing happens with windows and all it's temporary files and
--most importantly-- the registry entries.
