When you press a key (or combination of keys using ctrl, alt, or shift) on
the keyboard, it sends a number to the computer.  The operating system or
the program that is currently running receives these numbers and does with
them whatever it wants to do.  For example, when you type "w", the running
program gets the corresponding number.  A word processor might put the
letter w on the screen, but a game mignt move the hero forward.  It is
entirely up to the way the programmer wrote the program as to how to use the
number.

The "function keys" are used for whatever the program wants them to be used,
just like most of the rest of the keys.
