In newer versions of MS Word (all those from the last 6 years?) you don't
set global defaults anymore, you have to change the document template you
are using for the change to be universal and permanent. Find and open
normal.dot and make and save the changes you want to it. All new documents
using this template, (and that should be all your new documents) will have
this page setting.

Many times when I click on MSWord, the page is set up for 6-1/2" width, and
I have to go to File>Page Set-up and change all settings (except gutter) to
0.5" and click "default" and "yes" to get back to 7-1/2". What am I
leaving out? I thought if I hit "default" it would stay at 7-1/2" unless I
changed it.
