Great idea to start from scratch. I do it every 3/4 months, irrespective of
problems. Just can't trust Win9x ! Generates too much junk.
Here are some ideas :
1. Firstly, you can install even with the upgrade. Among various methods to
accomplish this, here's one I've found most convenient :
When the install program asks for the location of the earlier version of
Windows, direct it towards the installation disks of an earlier version.
I ask it to check a:\ in which I insert my old Win 3.11 setup floppy disk !
The install program asks to see about 5/6 of the disks; and it asks by disk
number, too.
I would think it would work even with a Win95 CD. Just copy the Win95
installation files to your hard disk, and direct the Win98 installation
program to it's location when asked.
2. I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND INSTALLING MS-DOS before installing Win98.
(This provides an important fall-back in case Win98 misbehaves later --
there's all the evidence in the world that Win9x can misbehave at will
almost !!).
Do an fdisk of your boot hard disk, format it and install MS-DOS first. If
you boot with the MS-DOS 6.22 setup disk in the floppy drive after
fdisk'ing, this setup disk will do the formatting for you, of course.
3. (If necessary) copy the Win95 installation files to the hard disk.
4. Now you can install Win98. Change to FAT32 after that, if you like.
Hope this helps. Cheers.
