It's most unlikely to be spyware. Spyware doesn't advertise its presence
(that would defeat its purpose).

if not a virus, then my guess is that it would steer your browser to some
website like the infernal X-Camera popup (which I trust no-one in their
right mind would consider purchasing or even visiting...let's not encourage
this pernicious form of advertising).

Presumably you've now eliminated it from your system.  Please let us all
know if you discover which website(s) is responsible, so that we can avoid it.
