I had the same concern, and was reluctant to renew, but as you're already running the online version, (as was
I) the uninstall should go fine - mine did. However, I don't know your setup - I was running WinME, IE5.5 and
OE5.5 at the time.
They are a bit misleading with the updates though - they tell you to close all open McAfee apps before the
update, which one might assume means shutting down virus scan altogether, but the first time I did that the
program crashed. Now I just close OE & IE - Zone Alarm and Dr. Watson don't seem to interfere at all.
As for scanning attachments in OE, I use the preview pane and try to save them first (with message
high-lighted, choose File / Save attachments). Just yesterday I did exactly that with a suspicious attachment
and McAfee jumped in as soon as I pressed OK - the attachment was infected with some version of the magistr
(sp?) virus. McAfee cleaned it, then I deleted the attachment and email. My system was not affected as I did
not run the exe in the attachment.
You can scan individual files and folders too - you just have to navigate to them. hth
