While this is correct, it is not the full story. Your friend's computer is
most likely infected with the Nimda virus. See:

If your antivirus is not notifying you that the attachments are evil, nasty

these email attachments with the extension;
.eml. Could someone please tell me what opens these files? I use
Netscape 4.78 with messenger and Internet Explorer 5.5 with Outlook
