With tabbed browsing you have a row of open web pages shown at the bottom or at the top of your browser.  You can switch between web pages by clicking on the tab for it.  You don't have to use your back button to go back to or forward to a particular web page.

Another excellent choice for tabbed browsing is Avant Browser which runs off IE6, but adds a number of features like tabbed browsing.  I have been using it about a year, and am addicted to it. Go to www.avantbrowser.com. Very popular on download.com.
