My OS is XP and I primarily use for free Easy Cleaner 2.0 from Toni 
Arts. It includes more than just a registry cleaner. I have never had 
any problems using it over the past few years. On the paid side I also 
use JV16 Power Tools.

CCleaner also seems popular as a free program and I have sometimes used 
it without any problems. There are a number of similar utilities and 
various individual preferences.

I am not sure how beneficial any registry cleaner is but, it feels good 
knowing I am trying to keep my computers fit and trim.
