There is no short answer to your question. It depends upon the software
program and the software author's need for system control and integration
of the program. Some applications, (they are becoming more rare with
each passing week), do nothing more than copy to a specific directory
and add a program group and Icon...
Then, you have the latest craze... they copy files to numerous sub directories
for different flavors of windows, they replace all sorts of existing library
files, rewrite whole sections of the registry and hide the auto-start command
lines... some do not even remove half of their adjustment to WIndows when
you uninstall them. They cannot for the most part, they have replaced
dozens of library files.
Hence, the answer to your question is: It depends on the particular software
application. There is no easy answer.
