Ira,
BMP is not good for very much of anything. It is used by applications to
make the pictures on toolbar buttons and works well with tiny pictures
such as that. But for large complex pictures, the file size is
unpractical.
GIF is the versatile workhorse of the internet, they can be made
transparent (so the that the unused edges of the rectangle are invisible),
and they can be animated. But they lack the fidelity and high color
content of a jpg.
JPG is the the most complex picture format used on the 'net. With it's
high color count and tiny pixel size, it is very close to photograph
quality. The higher degree of complexity means the file size is much
larger than a GIF and it takes longer to download from the 'net. There
are compression techniques which can reduce the file size, but when you
add in the time needed to uncompress and display the file, I don't think
it saves any time in the overall scheme of things.
