This happens without any program being run, and the exact pattern of errors
seems random. Sometimes you even get a few minutes use before they start
happening, but once started they go crazy and all that can be done is to
turn the computer off.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this short of re-installing

John, it sounds as if your computer is well overdue for a registry
restoration. I'd bet performance is down, too.
See my Web tutorial on registry backup/restoration and also the one on
proper Crash procedure.
You don't say what OS you're running, nor any details of your
computer. These problems could be caused by any number of possibilities,
improper closures/restarts being the most likely, resulting in registry
corruption and further instability. It's a catch-21 situation which may
eventually lead to complete failure if not nipped early in the bud, before
the corruptions get too bad.
