My first question would be are you running the disk with 98 open? If so, try
putting the disk into the drive and exit the installation. Restart the
machine with the disk in the drive. ( you may have to change the boot
sequence in the bios first to boot from the CD. This way, 98 will not be
loaded and you can make all the necessary selections to format the drive
from the XP disk.
At least a guess and possibly a place to start...
