The Blaster Worm Virus was so wide-spread because it propagated to machines
before the Anti-Virus companies could update and distribute their AV
databases. This worm was able to get into any machine connected to the
Internet without a firewall, if the MS patch had not been applied. If
another similar exploit is discovered before MS has a patch, a firewall
would be your only protection until the AV software companies could
distribute a new virus database.
