Hi Paul,

It's been years since I've used Windows 98 but you should be able to take
the following procedure and modify it accordingly. Go to Control Panel /
Internet Options / Connections tab and select his ADSL connection (if he
also has a backup connection). Click the "Settings" button and insure his
User Name and Password is entered. Then click the "Properties" button and
insure the dial-up phone number is entered. Next, go to the "Options" tab
and under "Dialing options", uncheck everything. Click "OK". Back on the
Settings window, click the "Advanced" button and make sure "Disconnect if
idle..." and "Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed" are not
checked. Click "OK" until Internet Options is closed.

Another thing you might do is put a shortcut to the ADSL connection in the
Startup folder. Then it will connect when he starts the computer. Right
click the "Start" button and click "Explore". Windows Explorer will open to
the Start Menu. Expand "Programs" (click on the +) and click on the
"Startup" folder. Then from "Network Connections" (or the Windows 98
equivalent), right click the ADSL connection, drag it to the Taskbar and
hover over the Startup folder until it pops up. Continue to drag the
connection up into the Startup folder and release the right click. In the
window that appears, choose "Create Shortcuts Here".

Someone may have a better solution to offer. In any case, good luck.

Subject: [PCSOFT] Need for permanent password box checked!

Hi All,

In my work with blind people I get different requests from them which
enables them to have an easier computer experience and in this case it
is the internet. I have a client running win98 and since we set up his
internet using ADSL where his computer once had the "save password
checkbox, checked" and he didn't have to keep re-entering it everytime
he went on-line now he has to type it in each time. He doesn't have
children or anyone else in the house who would use his computer while he
isn't around so security in this way isn't necessary. He desperately
wants to have this feature activated again but no matter what settings I
have tried, I can't remember how to enable this feature in the
"connection screen" once the user name has been entered. I want him to
have both the user name and password saved in there so he doesn't have
to keep re-typing the password all the time. There doesn't seem to be
any checkbox available to allow us to set this up at the moment.

Many thanks,

Paul.
