Hi Joyce,

My advice would be to prioritize learning about Win7 and where the settings
are.
It will make life a lot easier.

Jumping to yet another OS ,like Linux , may well cause you to have as many.
if not more problems, mostly for drivers and especially if not used to
Linux.
But don't take my word for it ,try Ubuntu the easy way and see if you like
it.
No partitioning or wiping out Win7,just a simple WUBI install ,
followed by the install of Ubuntu.
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer
This installer creates a folder to which Ubuntu is subsequently downloaded
and installed.

Please read the guide before you do anything.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

Since the Ubuntu ISO is about 700 MB , you may want to consider doing this
at the library
or maybe order the CD for the version of Ubuntu you'd like to use.
In this case you have to set WUBI to install from a local source (the CD)
rather than connect to the server to download and install the Ubuntu ISO.

Problem > CDs (previously free) are now shipped , in 5 packs ,from
Canonical, UK
http://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=852

My advice: Contact the Ohio Ubuntu chapter
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OhioTeam

Anyway ,despite the above ,my closing remarks will be the same as my opening
ones,
ie, learn your way around in Win7.
There are several good Win7 forums in addition to Microsoft info about this
OS.
However, do as you see fit <g>

Subject: Re: [PCSOFT] Remove Windows 7?

Thanks Dean -- both instances were indeed Window$ updates. Each of them
arbitrarily shut down and re-started the computer and I lost what I was
working on. Dratted M$! I think I have a "handle" on it now though: I
found where to set it to notify me, but not download or install updates
unless _I_ give it permission. Did I mention Window$ 7 is all new to
me?! <G>

Wonder if Ubuntu would work on the laptop then? Wish I could afford a
Mac as fast, with as many features and as much speed as that Toshiba has!
