I did some more testing and found where the registry points to the folder.
Although I am running NT, Win95 should have a similar entry. Look in
USERS/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current_Version/Explorer/

There are two subtrees here - ShellFolders and UserShellFolders - each of
these has an entry called Personal REG_SZ which contains the name of the
mystery folder. If you rename the folder using Explorer, then the registry
is automatically updated. If you use some other way of renaming such as the
old File Manager or DOS session, then the link in the registry is not valid
and the item does not show up in the Start Menu / Documents list.

Incidentally, any change in the registry to the value in the
UserShellFolders will be reflected in the ShellFolders area and vice versa.

Hope this helps solve the mystery.
