Yes, a software firewall is necessary to (at least) prevent a trojan horse
from contacting its master.

In ZoneAlarm there is a setting to define your local zone: Security -
Advanced.
Under "Adapter Subnets" yor network card will be shown, and all computers
connected to that subnet will be treated as your local zone.

In the Security settings you can use the lever to set the security level for
your local zone to Medium.
