You should not be getting spam in your INBOX with gmail. It should be going to the spam folder. If you see spam in your inbox, rightclick and report it.

The spam folder is there so that if, for instance, you were expecting an email that you didn't get, you can check your spam folder to see if it got snagged. If so, you can right click it and say "not spam" so that it gets through from then on. The spam folder empties itself on the interval you specify - 30 days is probably a good choice. The spam folder is there as a safety net so you can catch things that may have been snagged, but that you actually want to receive. You should not normally even need to look in it.

I receive my gmail directly into my Outlook Express inbox, so I rarely go to the Google gmail site. I almost never get any spam. If you are getting a flood of spam in your INBOX, I would change the address and be careful in the future where you post it. Once an address gets into the hands of a spammer - it mushrooms; it is never "fixable" - trying to reclaim it by setting filters is a losing game - you just have to start over with a fresh email address and be more careful with it.

I have several email addresses for different purposes. I also use temporary email addresses when I first give my email out to someone or use it on a website, marked for that particular site/person. If I don't see any spam in it in a couple of months, then I give them a good email address and drop the temporary one. This way I can tell exactly who spams me, or who "shares" my address with spammers and who does not.

I, too, have a couple of gmail accounts and 85 out 100 messages that I
receive are spam also. I've also tried blocking them, with no effect.
Most of the spam I receive are offers to enlarge certain male parts,
