This is an interesting point. I guess I was looking down the other path
based on two assumptions that may or may not be true.

1. In the future I would want a DVD player for general computing workhorse
tasks such as installing software. Since I would have to spend the money
to buy a DVD player then I figured I could save a few bucks by using it to
"replace my aging VCR" and not buy a dedicated DVD system.
I suppose what this boils down to is the following question. Is there any
incentive to buy a DVD player for the computer other than watching movies?

2. I figured with the ever growing availability of digital music and
movies, I would essentially just use my computer(s) as central
"entertainment servers". The DVD idea was just the first step in the
process to replace my severely aging stereo, tape deck, CD player, TV/VCR
etc ... This way I could buy 1 DVD player, 1 set of nice speakers, listen to
streaming audio and mp3s as well as CD's, play games (the nice speakers
would be good here), and do everything else I needed through my "home
computer network".

OK ... I'm getting a little ahead of things here. What can I say, like any
average American I want it all. ;-)

Any thoughts?
