I have found a similar thing when I have installed new machines by switching
the PC leaving the original mouse and keyboard in place. The OLD mouse is
many times not recognized. It appears to me to be a hardware problem in the
old mice. I swap the mouse with a new mouse, and the problem goes away. You
just may have an "old" mouse that does not talk to Win2K. Try a new PS2
mouse and see if the problem goes away like mine did.

The old mice are fine in Win9x and NT but are not recognized by Win2k.
