I recently replaced this exact HD in an Acer laptop. Or, I should say, I
intended to replace it. It wouldn't boot at all (I/O error), so I
ordered a new HD($100.00), and decided to remove the old one while I
waited for the new one.
Just for the heck of it, I attached it to my desktop via USB to see if I
could save any files, but the disk was unreadable. XP asked if I wanted
to format it, so I said yes (Note-there were three partitions, and only
the boot partition was unreadable. One partition was blank, and the
other had the Acer support files).
The disk formatted perfectly, and I re-installed XP. It's working
perfectly as I write. I asked about this on this list, but never got an
answer as to why the original problem occurred. I sent the new drive
back to Tiger Direct, who were kind enough to give me a full refund even
though they had a right to a re-stocking fee.
It certainly sounds as though there's a physical problem with the disk.
It would be interesting to see if any of the mounting hardware or ribbon
cables are loose.
Replacement is simple once you figure out how to remove the drive. I
found no diagrams or instructions for the Acer laptop, but it was
obvious which bay held the HD. The Ribbon cable attached to an adapter
which had to be removed from the HD (Just pull it off if you have this
arrangement). I used a jeweler's screwdriver (Size-teeny-tiny) and was
very careful with the itty-bitty screws, which looked irreplaceable if lost.
You might also check in the BIOS and see if S.M.A.R.T. is available and
enabled.
