Just getting error messages on a machine booting Windows 9X doesn´t always
mean incompatible memory. Most machines (most that I have seen) by default
do not use a CONFIG.SYS file or they do not have instructions to test memory
properly at boot-up, consequentialy, you get errors later in Windows.
Insert these lines (exactly) into your config.sys file using notepad or
sysedit program as the two first entrys and let DOS test your memory before
Windows uses it:
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON /V
Note the switch "ON" and /V, very important! If you observe any errors here
at boot, take the suspect memory out and try in another machine with the
same config.sys instructions (a boot floppy is preferable). You might find
the memory was bad, or the memory slot was dirty or defective. This is a
simple test, I know, but it is fast.
