I don't know how accurately this utility reports the speed, etc. but its
free.  CD-ROM analyzer can be d/l from
http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?fcode=000VM
B&b=uk.  This is all a one line string since it is word-wrapped.  HTH.  :-)
