I ran a 3 camera X10 system in my 88 year old father's home so I could keep
an
eye on him. I didn't use the remote software from X10. I just used the
standard software and accessed a PC at his home with pcAnywhere so I could
control all the cameras. It worked fine.

If you could find a temperature
sensor that would feed it's data into a pc, then you could view that through
pcAnywhere or similar software too.

I handled the rebooting issue with
Automate. I could reboot the PC and then Automate would get the remote
software initialized.

On thing about X10; the cameras, at
least the ones I had, don't do well in low light.

This was 2 years ago. I'm sure there must be better options now. It was the
cheapest setup I could put together at the time.

Subject: [PCBUILD] PC based home security system

> I would like to monitor a home 400 miles away from my home via my PC. Are
there any products out there that can allow me to monitor the inside temp,
activate outside spot lights, possibly snap shots or streaming video from
video cameras placed outside or inside the home? I checked with X10.com but
they don't have a system that can monitor the temp. Would PC-anywhere be
useful as a tool to access the PC at the other end? I would also need a UPS
and a PC that once shut down to boot back into the application. Any
suggestions would be a great help.
