I depends: best value (performance/dollar) or the Intel name? The AMD 1.3
GHz outperforms an Intel 1.7 GHz PIV by about 20% and costs about
two-thrids of the Intel. Our entire department is converting to AMD from
Intel because: 1) we have found AMD more reliable and more secure; 2) we
get a much better "bang for the buck" ratio with AMD; and 3) systems built
around AMDs seem to be less picky about what OS is run on them, and we run
several with WinXX a minority.

Again, this is our local experience in a math department with 60+ boxes.
