Here at work I have an IBM 300PL (P2-300MHz, CD-ROM, sound card) and a 17
inch IBM G54 colour monitor. This morning I measured the current being drawn
by the computer and monitor separately. The results are (assuming a power
factor of 1):
Computer: Power = 117 volts * 0.7 amps = 81.9 watts
Monitor Power = 117 volts * 1.1 amps = 128.7 watts.
My computer is on for 8.5 hours per day. The cost of electricity here is
0.0835 $/kwh.
Rather than turning this computer and monitor off, if I left it on for 24
hrs per day the additional yearly cost would be :
Yearly Cost = (24-8.5)h/day * 365 days/year * (128.7 + 81.8)/1000 kw *
0.0835 $/kwh
= $99.44
