Another thing to remember when counting beans and the cost of leaving
your computer on is the fact that all electricity eventually ends up
truning to heat. This means that the power consumed will be added as
heat to the room it is in. If this occurs during the winter and your
airconditioning is off then it is reducing the cost of heating the
room. If it is during the summer and your air conditioning is on then
it is adding to your cost of cooling the room.

PA> Here at work I have an IBM 300PL (P2-300MHz, CD-ROM, sound card) and
a 17
PA> inch IBM G54 colour monitor. This morning I measured the current
being drawn
PA> by the computer and monitor separately. The results are (assuming a
power
PA> factor of 1):
PA> Computer: Power = 117 volts * 0.7 amps = 81.9 watts
PA> Monitor Power = 117 volts * 1.1 amps = 128.7 watts.
PA> My computer is on for 8.5 hours per day. The cost of electricity
here is
PA> 0.0835 $/kwh.
PA> Rather than turning this computer and monitor off, if I left it on
for 24
PA> hrs per day the additional yearly cost would be :
PA> Yearly Cost = (24-8.5)h/day * 365 days/year * (128.7 + 81.8)/1000 kw
*
PA> 0.0835 $/kwh = $99.44
