Only a thin layer is needed between the heat sink and the cpu.  The purpose
of the paste is to fill in any imperfections on the surfaces of the heat
sink and cpu.  This provides a larger cooling surface.

Is there a good place to go that shows some pictures of what a CPU should
look like w/ thermal paste applied?  I tend to be one of these individuals
that when it comes to anything that involves pastes in a tube, I use either
too much or too little.
