According to Wikipedia:

Taking the "overhead"in to account, the approximate rate for SATA Rev. 
1.0 (1.g Gbit SATA) is 150 MB/s.  Current drives can operate at approx. 
157 MB/s, which would exceed the SATA Rev. 1.0 speed.

Additionally, there are other types of peripherals that can attached to 
the SATA bus that would exceed the SATA Rev. 1.0 rates such as SSD 
(solid state drives) which can operate in excess of 300 MB/s.
