There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about this issue. I had this
same question when I first installed my Segate ULTRA drive and wanted to
run either a non Ultra or Cd drive as a slave ..... so I asked Seagate ,
Western digital and Promise ....who advised me that it  makes no difference.

In addition my FIC PA2007 manual states

<The mainboard also supports existing PIP Mode3, PIO Mode 4 and DMA Mode2
devices using the same cable.>

I have tried it both ways....same channel....separate channels ...... and
have benchmarked no difference.
