A friend of mine has been having Internet difficulties for some
considerable time. It was not that important until he started to
leave his computer running 24 hour a day. The reason for 24/7 is he
now has video security cameras set up to monitor and record
intrusions. The problem was apparent before the cameras were fitted.
What happens is after some hours of sitting idle his computer, for
no apparent reason, is no longer able to contact the Internet
(email or browse) and both his computer and modem/router have to be
shut down and restarted to get it working again. Interestingly,
sometimes he is able to use PalTalk.
He has changed his modem/router, Ethernet cable, ISP and Local
Connection (from an Ethernet board to the MO connections) to no
avail (his Internet connection is ADSL).
I ran MS's Local Connection Repair option and also WinsockFix.
Neither has fixed the problem. The only clue given was the Repair
program said that it was unable to find the IP address, although at
the time he was connected to the Internet.
Anyone any clues as to what could be causing this dropout?
