I can try this again, but how is this better than trying with the modem
completely removed? If the modem was the problem, wouldn't the sound card
work if the modem wasn't installed, was physically lying on the table 4 feet
from the computer? If memory serves, I did try installing the modem in a
different isa slot, it's the only isa card in the box, and I'm sure i moved
it around during the hassle of trying to trouble shoot this.

I'll reboot right after this and try it, if it works, I post it, of course,
thanks for suggestion.
