  A link light indicates success only as far as the physical (cable) layer.
Ping goes further, testing the "data link" and "network" (addressing)
layers, and timed out requests would indicate a configuration problem at
this level.  (Also note that Ping is specific to the TCP/IP network
protocol, which might not even be installed.)
  Go into the Network setup on each of the machines and make sure that
TCP/IP is installed and enabled.  If it is, go to a command-prompt window
and type "ipconfig /all" to dump out the current config status in text form,
and send that back here to the list so we can see what it says.  (It's easy
to capture this output to a text file by adding ">file.txt" to the end of
the command, although you'll wind up with files on the two different
machines and need to use a floppy or something to move them to the machine
where you send your email.)
