John,
        I have installed one similar to that card in a Packard Bell and the
onboard video is disabled.  This comes about by putting the PCI card in
(preferably in slot one, consult your manual).  You then close up the
case normally and turn the unit on with the monitor plugged into the new
video card.  At first you might not see anything, then there is a quick
flash on the monitor and everything is visible from the BIOS insignia to
the memory test at start-up.  You then wait till your operating system is
up (win95, 98, etc.) and load the drivers via CD or diskette and reboot.
Everything should go on from there.  I had no problem with the one I
upgraded.
