It is an: ASUS SP97-v , pentium 166 mmx and 64meg of ram (v = onboard video)
the ASUS board has a socket 7 socket for the chip. What I'd like to do is put
the fastest chip possible/practicable in this machine, The manual that came
with the mainboard says it can take a pentium 233, I am wondering if it can
support any later chips, and if so what??.

Hi Leigh!

You are right, "technically" because you your motherboards CPU voltage
settings, an Intel Pentium 233 and an AMD K6 & K6-2 300 are your fastest
choices to to run. You can still find a few K6-2 300s around, but make sure
they're 2.2v models. Or...

This has worked for me and some others, but move forward at your own risk. The
SP97 CAN run an AMD K6-III (and quite fast I might add) if you work it right.
First start out with a K6-III 400. If 2.2v (rare find) just set your jumps to
the auto voltage detect setting (2.1v-2.9v). Set the clock multiplier to x2
and now you have 66x6 or 400Mhz! Then download and add Powerleaps Control
Panel ( http://www.powerleap.com/ccp4015.htm ) and your under way! If all you
can find is a 2.4v CPU you can try the auto voltage setting, but its if-fy.
And the 2.8v setting does work on these, but shortens the life abit.
Regardless, a good 60mm, high speed fan/heatsink is a MUST. And use it with
some heatsink compound for the best performance.

An added note. If you get 2.4 running at 2.8, overclocking to 450 (6x75) is
real easy...
