DVD does not stand for anything.

Originally, it stood for "digital video disk," but
since it had many more applications, some
balked and wanted it called "digital versitile
disk," (which seems to me to be a really silly
name), but that did not go over well.  All seemed
to agree that it did not have to stand for anything.
It would just be the name of the thing.  DVD. Period.
