tools menu of System Information (system tools on accessories menu to start).
Use SFC to import from the Win CD a new defrag file. If that doesn't work,
then go to your HD manufacturer's web site to download the utility that
checks for drive errors. Western Digital has one, and I think Maxtor does
also. Your HD is fairly old if it's OEM with a PII 450 system, and may be
about to fail completely, which is what the manufacturer's utilities will
tell you. Did you run a Scandisk Thorough on this drive? See if that turns
up any problems. >>

Funny you should mention go back. I did revert to an earlier boot and it
seemed to work fine for a while. Did a thorough scan disk. Besides taking
forever it reported no errors. Which kind of surprises me.

This is an IBM 16 gig so I'll try their site for utilities. I did activate
the SMART drive capability but haven't gotten any alerts.

thanks,
