In conjunction with Dean's advice I would recommend going to Seagate's web
site and searching for the parameters to enter for your particular drive
unless you have the manual. (I'm almost positive they will have it).
Another possibility could be that the Master/Slave jumper is incorrectly
set. Again the correct pins should be available via the web page or the
manual. Also be sure to check that the IDE and power cable are secure (can
you hear the hard drive being accessed at all?).

If all these fail there is one more possibility. :-\ Compaq has a
tendency to do things a little bit differently than other people. I have a
Compaq Presario 4112 and I know that on my model and many others, the CMOS
settings are actually stored in a separate, non-DOS partition on the hard
drive (kinda cooky isn't it?). What this means is that the only way I can
install a new PRIMARY BOOTABLE hard drive is to use the Compaq Quick
Restore CD and floppy disk. You will be able to install secondary hard
drives without any trouble (I've done it and it went quite smoothly), but
by removing the only hard drive in the system you would effectively remove
all of the BIOS information too. If this is in fact the case, you'll need
the CD and floppy specific to your model. Hopefully your friend still has
them, but if not, I recommend calling Compaq. I've called for the same
request before and I seem to recall that they sent it to me free (but it
took awhile because it was on backorder - kinda strange). However, pay
attention, check their policy on charging you for the phone call. I seem
to remember a $35 fee for technical calls that didn't result in bad
hardware (ouch!!). Another possibility might be to find some kind soul in
this group or on "alt.sys.pc-clone.compaq" that would send the disks to you
if they have them.

Hope this is of some help,

Bill Nussbaumer
