For a home network with just a couple or three PCs, you can
slap it together any old way you want, as Don points out.

But for a company system, using a personal preference for wiring
connections instead adhering to the published specifications and
standards is just begging for problems in the long run.

If the next technician to work on the system doesn't know your
"personal" wiring scheme, he could take down the entire network
simply by punching down one single wire in the wiring closet.

I have been in this business for a long time and I have NEVER
met a *professional* who would deviate from the specs.
