Ralph,
When you say you disconnected it, did you disconnect the power or Un-Install Windows?
From what I can guess, either you did not select your HDD as the boot drive or you did not "save and exit" your bios (usually F10) the other option is your HDD has been corrupted or physically damaged. Try a new HDD if this is the case, (you can buy an inexpensive one then return it after you verify the laptop recognizes it or not) put your OS disk in CD/DVD ROM set Bios to boot from CD ROM, see if the OS will install to the new drive, if it does that will confirm corrupted/Damaged HDD.  Reset BIOS to boot to HDD after installed.
