David,
        The scandisk feature happens naturally every time you shutdown the
computer without choosing Start/Shut_Down/Shut_Down_the_Computer . If you
press the On/Off button without exiting Win98, the system may have
problems, and the scandisk comes to the rescue.
        Now, if the scandisk comes even when you exit Win98 before
shutting down, it may be a configuration issue, that can be easily fixed.
