Hi,
  The 16 color only means it is working with the default VGA drivers. These
work with ALL video cards, but have a 16 color limit. To get more, you need
to install the correct video drivers for the video card that is installed in
the computer.
  On any monitor, if you set the resolution or refresh rate too high, it will
not display (it will be beyond the monitors capabilities, this *might* also
damage the monitor, so it is not advisable to do). Older monitors usually
have more limited resolution/refresh limits. If you keep the resolution to
800x600 or less and the refresh to 60Hz, then you should be OK, you might try
up to 75Hz, but on an older monitor, I wouldn't go much higher than that.
