A friend had a problem with his computer. I re-formatted the hard
drive. No problems reported. I then installed Windows 95 (it had been functioning
on this computer before until something happened). No
problem UNTIL it fires up for the first time (at the end of the
setup). Things go smoothly until it looks for hardware. At this
point it locks up. I have re-formatted the drive again and repeated
the installation. Same problem.

The computer itself is very basic. No sound card, no network card, no
CD (using a backpack CD like I did originally when it installed fine).

Any suggestions?
