Yes: LINUX

Linux is a freely available Unix workalike.  Although functionally a
Unix variant, it uses no Unix code and is therefore not truly a Unix
variant.

Linux will run quite well on a 486 with 8MB RAM (though if you want to
use the X-Windows environment, 16MB would be much better).  My main
desktop machine here at work is a P100 with 32MB RAM, and I do quite a
number of things with it.

Linux offers an excellent opportunity to learn more about Unix &
networking on fairly minimal hardware.
