The new HD is actually connected as a SCSI. I finally used the latest
Norton/Symantec Ghost to clone my regular C: drive (Ghost recognized that
there was a second "regular" drive (I also have a 3rd drive connected by USB
cable) and, after the cloning, the computer recognized the D: drive.

That is the only instance known by me of an instance where a Norton product
helped--usually I will not let anything named ""Norton" anywhere near my
computers.

My experience:

If the unit is going into an external Usb hard drive case it needs to be
formated first.

If the unit is going into a removable IDE device, it should be able to be
formated in the system, provided the hard drive rack system is powered keyed
on.

Mine says to format it before you install it into the case... (These
instructions came with the case...)
